Rôle play

Children playing house are assuming parts but they are not rôle playing. They are only being themselves.

Managers are expected to be psychologically immersed in their jobs—rather than to rôle play as in bureaucracies—and it is for this reason that so much importance is attached to fostering appropriate organizational cultures, since it is through these rather than through explicitly stated rules and regulations that psychological involvement is to be obtained (Hofstede 1991).

The person offering the description rôle plays the person described, and one of the other two rôle plays the person trying to resolve the situation.

Everything that happens in the incident discussions and in the rôle plays is from then on regarded as a given fact. Chris Robson, one of our project teachers, found that her group of 10-year-old slow learners could not grasp the concept of a standard unit of weight until she set up a rôle play for them. She introduced ‘Weight Street’ to them. Weight Street had three sweet shops and no standard weights.

“Yvon changes characters,” Denni insisted indignantly, his expression showing hurt . “I just dress up to set a rôle play.”
